North Texas summers are the hardest thing a camper van faces anywhere we deliver. Fort Worth regularly runs stretches of 100-degree days, sometimes for weeks at a time, and overnight lows in July and August frequently stay in the upper 70s or low 80s. A van here does not get a cool night to recover. That single fact decides the whole specification: air conditioning that runs off a battery bank sized to carry it from dusk to dawn, with insulation and ventilation doing everything they can to reduce the load first.
What you get for that is a good base. Lake Mineral Wells State Park is an hour west with real rock climbing, Dinosaur Valley an hour and a quarter southwest, Possum Kingdom Lake an hour and a half, and the new Palo Pinto Mountains State Park nearby. The Hill Country is three hours south, Caprock Canyons four hours northwest, and Big Bend around eight.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers across Texas. Conversion packages start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models run from $119,700 to $192,570. For the statewide picture, see
camper vans in Texas.
Shade, insulation, ventilation, then air conditioning. An awning is worth more per dollar in Texas than almost any other option. Managing heat before relying on air conditioning can help reduce energy demand and improve comfort during long, hot summer days.
A lithium battery bank, roof solar, DC-DC alternator charging, shore power, an inverter, and a reliable battery monitor support off-grid travel. The Vansmith can plan the electrical system around your appliances, overnight power needs, and expected time away from hookups.
A 12V compressor refrigerator can run from the house battery without requiring shore power. In Texas heat, refrigeration can work harder than it would in cooler climates, making battery capacity, ventilation, and refrigerator efficiency important considerations for extended trips.
Choose fresh water and wastewater tank capacities based on your travel style and expected time between service stops. In West Texas, refill points can be far apart, and hot weather can increase water consumption, so planning capacity ahead can make longer trips easier.
A gear garage beneath a raised bed provides useful space for bikes and bulky outdoor equipment, with access through the rear doors. Roof racks and interior tie-downs can provide additional ways to carry camping gear while keeping everyday essentials organized.
Texas heat can put additional stress on tires. Check tire pressures regularly during summer travel and monitor tire age as well as tread condition, since heat and UV exposure can accelerate rubber deterioration. Choose tires, suspension, and ground clearance suited to your vehicle, load, and intended routes.
| Specification | Why It Matters in Fort Worth | What Buyers Should Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Air conditioning | Weeks of 100-degree days with overnight lows that stay near 80 | Cooling capacity against usable battery capacity, and genuine dusk-to-dawn runtime |
| Insulation | The cheapest cooling available; every degree kept out is one the A/C need not remove | Coverage on all six sides, and a material rated for sustained heat |
| House battery | Running cooling through a night that never cools is the defining load here | Usable capacity rather than nominal; this is where to spend first in Texas |
| Solar charging | Excellent Texas sun, but a parked van under A/C can outpace panel production | Panel wattage against roof area; treat solar as support, not as the whole answer |
| Alternator charging | Recovers the battery bank on long Texas driving legs | DC-DC charger output, and what it replaces on a two-hour drive |
| Fresh water | West Texas services are far apart and heat drives consumption up | Capacity against your realistic route, plus a plan for where you refill |
| Refrigeration | The fridge works harder in Texas heat than it would further north | Capacity and efficiency; a 12V compressor fridge runs on battery alone |
| Vehicle dimensions | Texas state park campground length limits, plus your own garage | Approximately 19.5 ft or 22.5 ft long, and 9 to 10 ft tall; measure your own opening |
| Payload | Water, batteries, and air conditioning add weight before any gear goes in | Chassis payload rating against your realistic loaded weight; assessed for each build |
| Drivetrain | RWD suits interstate miles; AWD and 4x4 suit West Texas gravel and ranch roads | Choose around the roads you actually drive, not the ones you might |
| Ground clearance | Ranch roads, river access, and Big Bend backcountry routes | Clearance and approach angles; depends on chassis, trim, and drivetrain |
| Electrical monitoring | Running A/C overnight off-grid means you need to know exactly what power remains | A battery monitor showing real state of charge, not a voltage gauge |
| Tires | Sustained heat and long interstate miles age tires faster here | Check date codes as well as tread, and pressures more often in summer |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing, and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim, and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each specification against your selected van during the design call.
Nine tailored layouts across the two-person DUO Series and the four-person FAMILY Series, on Sprinter 144 and 170 wheelbases and Transit 148 and 148 extended, plus three pre-built Bivy trims. Browse all tailored models.
A Class B RV is a camper built inside a van body rather than on a truck chassis. It parks in a standard space, fits many garages, and drives like a tall van, which matters when a trip to Big Bend is an eight-hour haul. Browse our Class B RVs for sale.
Our full current stock, including inspected used vans, is on the camper vans for sale page.
Pre-built Bivy models are typically ready in 8 to 10 weeks; tailored builds generally take 12 to 16 weeks. Use our van designer or call (303) 414-6834 for a fixed, itemized quote.
The system the whole van depends on here, and the one to specify first. The question is not whether a van has air conditioning but whether it can run it all night off the battery, because Texas state park sites without hookups are common and generator use is restricted at many of them. See our A/C installation page and our 12V A/C guide.
Insulation on all six sides is the cheapest cooling you can buy, because every degree it keeps out is a degree the air conditioner does not have to remove. It is also the one thing you cannot add later without taking the interior apart.
A powered roof fan pulls hot air out through the ceiling while cooler air enters low. Combined with insulated window covers and an awning, it reduces the cooling load before the compressor runs. See our roof vent installation page and our guide to keeping an RV cool in summer.
This is where the money goes in a Texas van. Running air conditioning through a night that never drops below 80 degrees is a real load, and it is what the battery bank has to be sized for. See our electrical system work.
Texas gives you excellent solar potential, with long days and clear skies through the hot months. The honest caveat is that a van sitting still with air conditioning running will draw power faster than a roof array replaces it, so treat solar as something that extends your stay rather than powers the nights. DC-DC alternator charging replenishes the battery bank while you drive. See Solar Installation and our solar sizing guide.
West Texas and Big Bend have services genuinely far apart, and heat drives water consumption up more than people expect. Carry more than you plan to use and know where you can refill.
Climbing gear for Mineral Wells, bikes for the Trinity Trails and the Northshore, fishing and paddling equipment for Possum Kingdom, and camping gear all need space. A gear garage under a raised bed with rear-door access keeps equipment out of the living area.
The Sprinter in 144- or 170-inch wheelbase, with all-wheel drive available on eligible configurations, can be outfitted as a full camper. Fort Worth searches for luxury Sprinter vans usually mean one of two things: a high-specification camper, which is what The Vansmith offers, or an executive shuttle with captain's chairs and a television, which is a different product sold by limousine and shuttle upfitters. See Sprinter van conversions and Sprinter campers for sale.
Our higher-specification layouts, the DUO XLS at $63,950 and FAMILY XLS at $68,950 as camper packages, carry the fullest finish and system specifications we offer. The Bivy Deluxe at $192,570 complete is the top of the pre-built range, with a 15 kWh electrical system, air conditioning, a Rixen hydronic heater, and a secondary alternator.
Choose fixed bed layouts for two with a full gear garage beneath, or convertible arrangements designed to sleep four. Bivy models add a pop-top for standing room and a second sleeping level.
Lithium battery banks up to 15 kWh, roof solar, DC-DC alternator charging, shore power, an inverter, and a battery monitor support off-grid use. Exterior showers, awnings, air conditioning, and additional solar are available options, depending on the selected configuration.
Rear-wheel drive suits a van that spends most of its time on Texas interstate highways. All-wheel drive and 4x4 are worth considering if your travel includes West Texas gravel, Hill Country ranch roads, or regions with winter conditions.
The Sprinter is available in 144- and 170-inch wheelbases, with all-wheel drive and 4x4 availability depending on model year and configuration. It remains an established platform for camper layouts. Explore Sprinter van conversions.
The Transit generally costs less to buy and service, Ford dealers are widely available in Texas, and all-wheel drive is offered on eligible model years. For many Fort Worth buyers, it can be the better value, leaving more of the budget for battery capacity where it matters in the Texas heat. See Ford Transit van conversions and our Sprinter vs. Transit comparison.
Fort Worth has the space for an extended van, and Texas distances can justify the extra living area. The counterarguments are campground length limits at some Texas state parks and crosswinds on open highways west of the metro. See small camper vans.
All-wheel drive and 4x4 can be useful on West Texas gravel and ranch roads, but may be less relevant for metro driving and interstate travel. Many Fort Worth buyers may benefit more from putting that budget into cooling and battery capacity.
The DUO Series suits two adults with generous gear storage, while the FAMILY Series sleeps four. See camper vans for couples and family van conversions.
DUO from $46,950, DUO S from $53,950, DUO XLS from $63,950, plus the DUO XL on the longer wheelbase, priced on request.
FAMILY from $51,950, FAMILY XL from $61,950, and FAMILY XLS from $68,950.
Bivy Classic is $119,700 with a 5 kWh system, Bivy Plus is $145,845 with 10 kWh and an exterior shower, Bivy Deluxe is $192,570 with 15 kWh and air conditioning, and Bivy XL starts at $153,700. See the Bivy comparison. For Texas, the Deluxe deserves consideration because its 15 kWh system and air conditioning are relevant to extended hot-weather travel. Actual overnight runtime depends on operating conditions and power consumption.
Use the van designer to compare configurations before speaking with our team.
For North Texas, prioritize battery capacity, air conditioning, insulation, and ventilation before choosing the layout. A smaller van that can support your cooling needs for several nights off-grid may suit you better than a larger one without sufficient electrical capacity.
The Trinity Trails, Northshore, and trails around Mineral Wells offer options for cycling and mountain biking. Bikes can go inside a gear garage, on a rear rack, or on the roof. Interior storage also helps keep tires and components out of direct sunlight and extreme heat.
Backpacks, bags, stoves, and chairs fit in under-bed storage. Keeping heavier items low and forward helps manage weight distribution.
Possum Kingdom Lake, Eagle Mountain Lake, and Lake Worth offer opportunities for fishing and water recreation. Rods and tackle can be stored in a dedicated compartment rather than the living space.
Texas road trips often involve long driving distances, so dry storage for food, water, and equipment can matter more than it would in a state where destinations are closer together.
A gear garage beneath a raised bed, accessed through the rear doors, provides room for bulky equipment while keeping the main cabin organized.
Water, batteries, air conditioning, and gear all add weight before passengers are included. The Vansmith evaluates planned loaded weight against the selected chassis rating during the design call.
About an hour west of Fort Worth, Lake Mineral Wells State Park offers rock climbing at Penitentiary Hollow, a lake, camping, and a rail trail.
About an hour and a half west, Possum Kingdom Lake offers clear water, cliffs, and several camping options, including Possum Kingdom State Park.
About an hour and 15 minutes southwest near Glen Rose, Dinosaur Valley State Park features dinosaur tracks in the Paluxy River, camping, and swimming. Book well ahead for popular summer weekends.
Roughly an hour and a half west, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is one of Texas's newer state parks. Check its current opening status, available facilities, and access information before your visit.
Texas state parks generally require a day-use entry fee or annual pass, with camping booked separately and often well in advance. Some parks post vehicle length limits. Summer heat can make camping difficult without a van capable of maintaining comfortable interior temperatures. Confirm current fees, reservations, and site restrictions before leaving.
Austin is roughly three hours south, with the Hill Country beyond it. Enchanted Rock, Pedernales Falls, and Garner State Park are popular destinations that can book out months ahead during busy periods.
Big Bend is around eight hours southwest, Caprock Canyons about four hours northwest, and Carlsbad Caverns roughly seven hours west, depending on the route. Albuquerque is around nine hours away. San Antonio is about four hours south, while Dallas is nearby.
Texas summer camping requires careful preparation. Shade can be limited in parts of the state, water consumption rises in hot conditions, and burn bans may be imposed during dry periods. Check current county burn restrictions, carry adequate water, and plan activities around the hottest part of the afternoon. A properly specified air conditioning system can make a significant difference when camping in extreme heat.
Supply your own Sprinter or Transit, or buy a complete van with the chassis included from $115,950. Cabinetry, bed platform, galley, seating, and finished surfaces are installed in our Boulder shop. See our Texas page and our process.
A lithium house battery, roof solar, DC-DC alternator charging, shore power input, an inverter, and a battery monitor showing state of charge can support travel away from electrical hookups. The exact configuration depends on your power requirements and selected model.
A 12V compressor fridge runs on battery power alongside a sink with a pressurized water system and a cooktop. This setup supports everyday meal preparation during extended road trips.
A fixed or convertible bed, depending on the layout, provides sleeping space. Insulated window covers and storage cabinetry help organize the interior. Most layouts offer a gear garage with rear-door access, and Bivy models add a pop-top.
Fresh and gray water tanks are sized to the selected layout, with a pressurized pump and accessible drain points. A fuel-fired air heater and powered roof fan support comfort in changing conditions. Plumbing protection and winterization are worth considering for occasional freezing weather in North Texas.
Available options may include air conditioning, additional solar, larger battery banks, suspension upgrades, tire packages, exterior showers, awnings, roof racks, and bike mounts. See repairs, installations and services.
The Vansmith provides a lifetime cabinetry warranty to the original owner, with no mileage or year limit. Appliance warranties are provided by their respective manufacturers. The Vansmith is NOAH certified; ask your insurer and lender how certification applies to your specific purchase.
The Vansmith has been family-owned since 2016, with more than 300 vans built across both platforms and multiple wheelbases.
Nine tailored layouts plus three pre-built Bivy trims give buyers options for different sleeping arrangements, storage requirements, and travel styles. The XLS packages and Bivy Deluxe carry the fullest specifications in their respective ranges.
The lithium battery bank, solar, DC-DC charging, shore power, inverter, and monitoring are planned as one system. For Texas buyers, that integration is especially important because overnight cooling off-grid depends on the complete system working together.
Cooling sized against usable battery capacity, insulation on all six sides, water capacity for long distances, and storage that keeps gear out of the living space are important considerations for North Texas travel.
The Vansmith operates its own shop in Boulder, Colorado, where the team handles the interior and systems installation. One company is accountable for the overall camper configuration.
Video design calls, progress photos, and staged payments support buyers purchasing from outside Colorado. Delivery from Boulder to Fort Worth is approximately 800 miles by road, depending on the route, making it one of the shorter delivery trips for The Vansmith.
The original owner receives a lifetime cabinetry warranty, alongside access to service and upgrade work at the Boulder shop. See repairs, installations and services.
A camper package covers the interior and systems fitted to a suitable van you supply, starting at $46,950 and ranging to $68,950. A complete camper van includes the chassis and finished camper setup, with prices starting at $115,950.
Bivy models range from $119,700 to $192,570, with the Bivy XL starting at $153,700. Pre-built Bivy models are typically ready in 8 to 10 weeks. Check current stock on the camper vans for sale page.
For Fort Worth, consider prioritizing battery capacity, air conditioning, and additional solar in that order. Options are priced individually so the quote can be itemized.
Delivery from Boulder is approximately 800 miles by road, depending on the route, and can be arranged as part of the purchase. Use our RV loan calculator and read how to finance a camper van.
