Albuquerque sits at about 5,300 feet with the Sandia Crest rising to over 10,000 feet directly east of the city. That ten-minute transition from high desert to alpine forest is unusual, and it shapes what a camper van needs here. Summer afternoons pass 95 degrees in the valley while nights at elevation drop into the 40s, and the monsoon arrives most summers with sudden, heavy storms.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, a high-desert city with much the same profile, and delivers them to buyers across New Mexico. We have built more than 300 vans since 2016. Conversion packages on a van you already own start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models run from $119,700 to $192,570 depending on trim. For the statewide picture, see our guide to
camper vans in New Mexico.
| Technical Specification | Albuquerque Requirement | Why It Matters | What We Build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cooling system | Off-grid capable cooling | Summer afternoons pass 95 degrees in the valley | 12V air conditioning sized to the battery bank |
| Ventilation | Strong controlled airflow | Dry heat responds well to airflow before cooling runs | Powered roof fan with variable speed and direction |
| Insulation | Coverage on all six sides | Works in both directions across a 40-degree daily swing | Full insulation; Havelock wool in pre-built Bivy models |
| Heating system | Reliable overnight heat | Desert nights and mountain trips both get cold | Fuel-fired air heater running off the vehicle's own fuel tank |
| Solar capacity | Strong year-round generation | New Mexico has among the best solar conditions in the country | Roof array sized to your layout and daily draw |
| Battery capacity | Sized to overnight load | Decides how long cooling or heating runs off-grid | Lithium bank sized around your largest overnight load |
| Alternator charging | Charging while driving | Long New Mexico drives are a charging opportunity | DC-DC charger fitted on every build |
| Shore power | External charging | Useful at campgrounds and at home | Onboard charger and shore connection on every build |
| Fresh water capacity | Sized for dry-climate travel | You drink more than you expect at elevation in dry air | Tanks sized to your realistic trip length |
| Wastewater capacity | Matched gray tank | Dispersed desert sites have no facilities | Gray capacity matched to fresh |
| Water system | Freeze and heat considerations | Winter nights freeze; summer heat warms tanks | Protected routing where layout allows, accessible drain points |
| Dust management | Sealed interior surfaces | Dust is constant on New Mexico back roads | Sealed cabinetry, washable flooring, gear garage for dusty equipment |
| Ground clearance | Suitable for graded dirt roads | Much of the best camping is off pavement | Suspension and tire upgrades available where routes justify them |
| Drivetrain | Suited to terrain and season | Forest roads and occasional mountain snow | RWD, AWD or 4x4 depending on platform |
| Tire specification | Mixed surface suitability | Dirt roads and long highway miles both matter | Chosen around your routes; confirm sizing for your chassis |
| Payload capacity | Capacity for water and gear | Extra water alone adds meaningful weight | Confirm GVWR against final build weight for your chassis |
| Storage capacity | Space for outdoor equipment | Bikes, packs and recovery gear | Gear garage under a raised bed, cabinets and roof racks |
| Vehicle length | Parking and forest road access | Approx. 19.5 ft short wheelbase or 22.5 ft extended | Choose around parking and the roads you drive |
| Vehicle height | Garage and parking clearance | Roughly 9 to 10 ft in high roof form | Measure your garage door opening before ordering |
| Electrical monitoring | Real-time state of charge | Tells you what you have left at a remote site | Battery monitor included on every build |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your build during the design call.
Seven tailored layouts across the two-person DUO Series and the four-person FAMILY Series, plus three pre-built Bivy trims. Browse all tailored models .
A Class B is a camper built on a van chassis rather than a truck frame. It parks in a standard space, fits most home garages, and drives like a tall van, which is what makes it usable as a daily vehicle. Browse our Class B RVs for sale .
The Sprinter holds its value, its diesel engine gets more range per tank across the long empty stretches of New Mexico, and its AWD and 4x4 options have years of proven use on forest and desert roads. It costs more to buy and service. Browse our Sprinter van conversion lineup or each Sprinter camper for sale we list.
Current stock, including inspected used vans, is listed on our camper vans for sale page.
Every layout is available as a camper van for sale in Albuquerque, built to order or shipped from stock. Use our van designer or call (303) 414-6834 for a fixed, itemized quote.
Insulation on all six sides, a powered roof fan that pulls hot air out through the ceiling where it collects, insulated window covers, and air conditioning options sized to the battery bank. See our guide on keeping an RV cool in summer and our A/C installation page.
A fuel-fired air heater runs off the vehicle's own fuel tank and draws very little electricity, which makes it practical for the cold end of a high-desert night even after a hot day.
Sealed Baltic birch cabinetry, washable flooring, and a gear garage that keeps dusty equipment out of the living space. Running the roof fan on intake with windows closed also keeps airborne dust down while you drive dirt roads.
Sealed roof penetrations, washable surfaces and a gear garage for wet equipment handle the van side. The travel side matters more: check forecasts, avoid camping in arroyos and low ground, and be prepared to move.
Dry air raises how much you drink well above your usual estimate. We size fresh and gray tanks around your realistic trip length, and an exterior shower makes rinsing dust off easy without emptying the tank.
The same insulation works in both directions. Paired with a roof fan for the afternoon and a heater for the night, it is what makes a 40-degree swing comfortable.
The Sandias, Jemez and Sangre de Cristos all climb well above 8,000 feet. Heater capacity, battery placement and tire choice all change for trips that spend nights at elevation.
Dedicated, accessible storage for extra water, recovery gear and food, planned into the layout rather than buried under camping equipment.
For most Albuquerque buyers who stay on pavement and graded forest roads, the Transit is the better value: lower purchase price, cheaper routine maintenance, and Ford dealers throughout New Mexico including the small towns on the way to anywhere. The EcoBoost engine also holds its power well at elevation, which is worth something starting from 5,300 feet.
The Sprinter earns its premium on long Southwest trips where diesel range between fill-ups matters, on rougher back roads where the 4x4 option helps, and at resale. Both platforms take every layout and system we build. Read our Sprinter vs. Transit guide .
A used van costs less and is available sooner, but you inherit someone else's layout and wiring. In New Mexico specifically, check the battery age because heat shortens battery life, check tire age as well as tread because UV and dry air degrade rubber regardless of mileage, and look for sun damage to seals, exterior finishes and interior materials.
We keep a rotating selection of inspected used camper vans that ship from Boulder. For private listings, use our used van buying checklist and read buying new vs. used .

For most New Mexico buyers, the decision comes down to water and power rather than floor space. If your trips take you to Chaco, the Gila or the Bisti, you want the larger tanks and battery bank of an extended layout. If you mostly camp in the Sandias and the Jemez on weekends, a short-wheelbase DUO or FAMILY covers it and is easier to park.
Conversion pricing covers the build only. Complete-van pricing from $115,950 includes the chassis, and we can source the vehicle for you.
Insulation on all six sides, wall and ceiling panels, flooring, cabinetry and the interior layout.
