Two things shape a camper van built for Dallas: heat and distance. Summer runs long and hot, and a van parked in a Dallas driveway in August is an oven by noon. Then there is the drive. Big Bend is nine hours southwest, the Ozarks six hours northeast, and Colorado a solid day. A van that works here has to handle both, and the first problem is really an electrical one.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers them to buyers across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The Sprinter holds its value, its diesel engine gets more range per tank on long Texas highways, and its AWD and 4x4 options have proven themselves off pavement. A 12V air conditioner runs from a lithium bank, but it is the biggest draw in the van by a wide margin. Runtime depends on battery capacity, insulation, outside temperature and shade. Most Texas setups pair a large bank with strong solar and DC-DC charging, then use shore power for all-night cooling in peak summer. Read our 12V air conditioning guide and see A/C installation .
Do these first. A powered roof fan pulls hot air out through the ceiling where it collects, insulated window covers keep sun off the glass, and full insulation slows heat gain. Driving recharges the bank, and shore power tops it off at campgrounds or at home. With solar, that gives three independent charging paths.

A high-roof van stands roughly 9 to 10 feet tall and a short-wheelbase build runs about 19.5 feet. Measure your garage, and if you live under an HOA, check its rules on where a vehicle that size can be parked before you order.
Short wheelbase for daily driving and garage storage; extended for longer trips with more water and storage. In a metroplex where most trips start with freeway miles, the shorter van is easier to live with.
A used van costs less and is available sooner, but you inherit someone else's layout and wiring. In Texas, check battery age carefully, because heat shortens battery life, and test the air conditioning under load. Height is the constraint people miss. Measure your garage door opening, not just the ceiling, and check HOA rules on parking a vehicle of that size.
Chassis service goes to a Mercedes or Ford dealer. Systems work, including solar, heaters, air conditioning and electrical, comes back to us at our Boulder shop, whether or not we built the van.
