Wildwood sits at the junction of I-75 and Florida's Turnpike, which makes it one of the better-positioned small towns in the state for anyone who travels. The Gulf is an hour west, the Atlantic about 90 minutes east, Ocala National Forest half an hour northeast, and Orlando an hour southeast. For a camper van owner, that crossroads position is the whole point.
What the van has to handle is central Florida heat and humidity, a daily thunderstorm pattern through summer, and salt air on both coasts. The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers them across central Florida. Conversion packages start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models run from $119,700 to $192,570. For the statewide picture, see
camper vans in Florida.
Summer highs reach the low 90s with humidity that pushes the heat index higher. Humidity is what makes a poorly ventilated van uncomfortable, often before the temperature would justify it.
Central Florida sees an afternoon thunderstorm pattern most days through the wet season. Sealed roof penetrations and a gear garage for wet equipment handle the practical side.
Both coasts are close enough for regular trips, which means regular salt exposure. Rinsing the underbody with fresh water after coastal travel is worth the habit, because salt accelerates corrosion on the underbody, fasteners and brake components.
Air conditioning is the largest draw in any van. For summer use away from hookups, the lithium bank needs to be sized around overnight cooling rather than daytime use.
Kayaks, bikes, fishing gear and beach equipment all need somewhere that is not the bed. A gear garage beneath a raised bed handles it, with roof racks for longer items.
Wildwood's position means most trips start with highway miles. Water, refrigeration and electrical capacity should be sized to the length of trip you actually take.
| Technical Factor | Wildwood Consideration | What to Evaluate | What We Build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air conditioning | Central Florida heat and humidity | Cooling capacity against battery capacity | 12V air conditioning sized to the lithium bank |
| Ventilation | Humidity more than raw temperature | Fan placement, speed and direction control | Powered roof fan with variable speed and direction |
| Insulation | Slows heat gain through the afternoon | Coverage on all six sides | Full insulation; Havelock wool in pre-built Bivy models |
| House battery | Overnight cooling is the limiting load | Usable capacity, not nominal | Lithium bank sized around your largest overnight load |
| Solar | Strong most of the year | Panel wattage against roof area | Roof array sized to layout and daily draw |
| Alternator charging | Highway miles are a charging opportunity | DC-DC charger output | DC-DC charger fitted on every build |
| Shore power | The practical answer for summer nights | Onboard charger and input rating | Shore connection on every build |
| Refrigeration | Ice does not last in Florida heat | Capacity and power draw | 12V compressor fridge running on battery power |
| Water system | Trip length and spring-country travel | Fresh and gray capacity | Tanks sized to your realistic trip length |
| Storage | Kayaks, bikes and beach gear | Interior volume plus roof racks | Gear garage under a raised bed, cabinets and roof racks |
| Vehicle dimensions | Community parking rules and garages | Length approx. 19.5 or 22.5 ft; height 9 to 10 ft | Measure your space and check community rules before ordering |
| Tires | Florida sun degrades rubber | Age as well as tread depth | Chosen around your routes; we flag age at service |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your build during the design call.
Nine tailored layouts across the two-person DUO Series and the four-person FAMILY Series, plus three pre-built Bivy trims. Browse all tailored models .
A Class B is a camper built on a van chassis rather than a truck frame. It parks in a standard space, fits most home garages, and drives like a tall van rather than a motorhome. For residents of The Villages and similar communities, that distinction often decides whether the vehicle can be kept at home at all, so check your community's rules before ordering. Every layout is available as a camper van for Wildwood buyers, built to order in Boulder. Use our van designer or call (303) 414-6834 for a fixed, itemized quote.
Wildwood sits near the middle of the peninsula, which means no destination in Florida is more than a few hours away.
I-75 runs north and south, Florida's Turnpike heads southeast toward Orlando and Miami, and US-301 provides an alternative north. Few places in the state make it easier to leave in any direction.
Florida winter is the best travel season in the country, with warm days, low humidity and no crowds at the springs. A properly specified van is usable twelve months a year here.
Ocala National Forest and the Crystal River springs are both close enough for an overnight. The Keys, the Panhandle and the Southeast are all week-long trips from the same driveway.
Roughly an hour to the Gulf and 90 minutes to the Atlantic. Very few places let you choose your coast on the morning of a trip.
The Sprinter holds its value, its diesel engine gets more range per tank on long Florida drives, and it offers proven AWD and 4x4 options. It costs more to buy and service. Browse our Sprinter van conversion lineup and Sprinter camper for sale listings.
Lower purchase price, cheaper routine maintenance, and Ford dealers throughout Florida. See our Ford Transit conversion builds and Ford camper vans for sale .
Short, around 19.5 feet, parks easily and fits most garages. Extended, around 22.5 feet, adds a full interior shower, larger tanks and more storage for longer trips.
The DUO Series sleeps two. The FAMILY Series provides four seatbelts and four berths, which is what decides family suitability rather than floor space.
A van around 19.5 feet drives close to a full-size pickup, which makes it comfortable on I-75 and manageable in town.
Weekend trips need less water and battery capacity than week-long ones. We size both around the trips you actually take rather than a maximum.
A used van costs less and is available sooner, but you inherit someone else's layout and wiring. In Florida specifically, check battery age because heat shortens battery life, check tire age as well as tread because sun degrades rubber regardless of mileage, look for water intrusion around roof fans and windows, and test the air conditioning under load rather than in the shade.
We keep a rotating selection of inspected used camper vans that ship from Boulder. For private listings, use our used van buying checklist .

For most Wildwood buyers the question is trip length. Overnight runs to the springs or either coast suit a short-wheelbase DUO or FAMILY. Week-long trips to the Keys or the Panhandle favor an extended layout with larger tanks and a full interior shower.
