Tampa puts the Gulf beaches 30 minutes west, the Everglades and the Keys within a day south, and the Panhandle a few hours north. A camper van for sale in Tampa has three things working against it and one working in its favor. Against: heat, humidity and salt air. In its favor: winter here is the best travel season in the country, and a well-built van is usable every month of the year.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers them to buyers across the Tampa Bay area. We have built more than 300 vans since 2016. Conversion packages on a van you already own start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models run from $119,700 to $192,570 depending on trim. For the statewide picture, see campervans for sale in Florida.
Summer highs sit in the low 90s with humidity that pushes the heat index considerably higher. A van parked in full sun gets much hotter than the outside air, which is why insulation and airflow come before cooling capacity.
Tampa Bay sees one of the highest lightning densities in the country, and afternoon storms are near-daily in summer. Sealed roof penetrations and a gear garage for wet equipment handle the practical side.
June through November. A self-contained van with its own power and water is genuinely useful during an outage and for evacuating early, but it is not shelter in a storm. Keep the fuel tank and water full during watches, and leave before the traffic does rather than riding it out.
Salt air accelerates corrosion on the underbody, fasteners and brake components, whether the van is driven or parked. Regular rinsing is the single most useful ownership habit on the Gulf coast.
Boards, chairs, coolers and bikes all need somewhere that is not the bed. A gear garage beneath a raised bed plus an exterior shower handles sand and salt before it gets inside.
The Keys are a full day south and the Panhandle several hours northwest, with long stretches where services are far apart in the Everglades.
| Technical Specification | Ford Transit | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter | Tampa-Specific Consideration |

| Ground clearance | Similar stock clearance | Similar stock clearance | Matters on soft sand access roads, where tires matter more |

| Fresh water capacity | Sized to layout | Sized to layout | Sized around Everglades and Keys gaps between services |
| Wastewater capacity | Gray tank sized to layout | Gray tank sized to layout | Determines waste water management at dispersed sites |

| Sleeping capacity | 2 in DUO, 4 in FAMILY | 2 in DUO, 4 in FAMILY | Seatbelt count decides family suitability |
| Storage capacity | Gear garage, cabinets, roof racks | Gear garage, cabinets, roof racks | Beach gear is usually the real constraint |
| Electrical monitoring | Battery monitor included | Battery monitor included | Tells you exactly how long cooling can run tonight |
| Towing capacity | Rated to tow; confirm for your chassis | Rated to tow; confirm for your chassis | Relevant for boat and kayak trailers |
| Garage clearance | Roughly 9 to 10 ft high roof | Roughly 9 to 10 ft high roof | Measure your garage door opening before ordering |
| Service requirements | Any Ford dealer in Florida | Fewer Mercedes van centers | A real factor if the van is your daily vehicle |
Exact figures for payload, turning radius, ground clearance and towing depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your build during the design call.
We build to order in Boulder and deliver throughout Florida. Current stock, including inspected used vans, is listed on our camper vans for sale page.
A Class B is a camper built on a van chassis rather than a truck frame. It parks in a standard space, fits most home garages, and drives like a tall van, which matters in a metro area where many communities limit where a full-size RV can sit. Browse our Class B RVs for sale .
If you already own a Sprinter or Transit, a conversion package starts at $46,950. Anyone comparing conversion vans in Tampa, Florida with a chassis already in the driveway starts here. A Foundation shell starts at $9,970 for self-builders.
Lower purchase price, cheaper routine maintenance, and Ford dealers throughout Florida. See our Ford Transit conversion builds and Ford camper vans for sale .
Stronger resale and diesel range for long Florida drives, at a higher purchase and service cost. Browse our Sprinter van conversion lineup and Sprinter camper for sale listings.

Insulation on all six sides, a powered roof fan, insulated window covers and air conditioning sized to the battery bank. See our guide on keeping an RV cool in summer and our A/C installation page.
Continuous airflow from a powered roof fan, sealed cabinetry and airflow paths behind panels so damp air escapes instead of condensing. Humidity, not temperature, is usually what makes a Florida van uncomfortable.
Sealed roof penetrations, washable flooring and a gear garage that keeps wet equipment out of the living space.
A self-contained van gives you the flexibility to move, change sites or wait out weather comfortably.
Keep fuel and fresh water topped up through the season, keep the battery bank charged, and treat the van as an early-evacuation asset rather than shelter. Know your evacuation zone and route before a storm is named.
Rinse the underbody with fresh water after beach and Keys trips, check seals regularly, and inspect fasteners and brake components more often than an inland owner would.
A gear garage beneath a raised bed, roof racks for boards and kayaks, and washable surfaces throughout.
Fresh and gray water, refrigeration, galley and electrical capacity sized to the longest gap between services on your route.

Pre-built on a Sprinter 144 AWD with a pop-top and four-season Havelock wool insulation, ready in 8 to 10 weeks. Classic from $119,700 with 5 kWh lithium, Plus from $145,845 with 10 kWh, Deluxe from $192,570 with 15 kWh and air conditioning.
Complete tailored vans with the chassis included start at $115,950. Compare Bivy trims on our Bivy comparison page or browse all tailored models .
For most Tampa buyers who stay on paved roads and state park routes, the Transit is the better value: lower purchase price, cheaper maintenance, and a dealer in every part of the state. The Sprinter earns its premium on long trips where diesel range matters, and at resale. Both take the same layouts and systems. Read our Sprinter vs. Transit guide .
A DUO gives one person a full galley, a fixed bed and a gear garage in a van that still parks anywhere.
The DUO Series in four versions, from the short DUO to the DUO XLS with a full interior bathroom. See camper vans for couples .
The FAMILY Series seats and sleeps four, with four seatbelts and four berths. See family van conversions .
The short-wheelbase layouts, which stay easy to park and store between trips.
A raised bed with a gear garage, an exterior shower and washable flooring, so sand stays out of the living space.
Roof racks for kayaks and boards, plus interior storage planned around what you actually carry.
Extended XL and XLS layouts with larger water tanks, more storage and a full interior shower.
Any layout with an upsized lithium bank, additional solar and DC-DC alternator charging.
Fort De Soto, Anna Maria Island, Sanibel and the beaches south toward Naples are all within a few hours.
A full day south, then the Overseas Highway. Keys campgrounds book out months ahead and many set vehicle length limits, so reserve early and check the limit against your build.
Around three hours southeast. Remote, hot and with very limited services, which is where self-contained water and power earn their keep.
The springs north of Orlando hold about 72 degrees year-round, which makes them a genuine summer escape. See our Orlando page .
St. Augustine, the Panhandle beaches and Apalachicola are three to six hours north and northwest.
Savannah and the Okefenokee are about five hours north. See camper vans in Georgia .
Gulf Shores is about eight hours northwest along the coast. See camper vans in Alabama .
