Condensation deserves its own note here. Two people breathing and cooking in a closed van overnight release a surprising amount of water vapor, and in cool damp weather that vapor finds every cold surface. Columbia River Gorge
Waterfalls, windsurfing at Hood River, and campgrounds on both sides of the river. Some Gorge access has used timed-entry permits in peak season, so check current requirements before you drive out.
Mount St. Helens
A volcanic landscape unlike anything else in the region, with dispersed camping in the surrounding national forest.
Mount Hood and Northern Oregon
An hour and a half southeast, with skiing well into spring and alpine hiking in summer. Chain requirements are common on Highway 26 in winter storms.
