Ready to Start Your Vancouver Camper Van Journey?

Vancouver, Washington sits at one of the best road trip crossroads in the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia River Gorge starts 20 minutes east, Mount St. Helens is an hour and a half north, Mount Hood is an hour and a half southeast, and the Oregon coast is under two hours away. A camper van for sale in Vancouver, WA has to handle wet winters, dry summers, and gorge wind that can surprise anyone driving a tall vehicle for the first time.

The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers them to buyers across southwest Washington. We have built more than 300 vans since 2016. Conversion packages on a van you already own start at $46,950, and complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950. For the statewide picture, see our guide to camper vans in Washington.

Why Vancouver, WA Is a Practical Starting Point

01

Access to the Columbia River Gorge

The Gorge begins minutes from town and runs east for 80 miles, with waterfalls, trailheads and campgrounds along the way. It is also a wind tunnel, which matters for a high-roof van on I-84.

02

Travel Toward Mount St. Helens

Roughly 90 minutes north, with the Johnston Ridge side typically accessible in summer and fall and the Windy Ridge approach on a longer forest road. High-elevation roads here close under snow through spring.

03

Pacific Northwest Weekend Travel

Portland sits directly across the river, which means Vancouver buyers can reach both Washington and Oregon destinations without a long drive first. Few cities offer that much variety within two hours.

04

Access to the Pacific Coast

Both the Washington and Oregon coasts are under two hours west. Expect steady wind, salt air and cool, damp nights even in August.

06

Longer Journeys Across the Western United States

From Vancouver you can reach California, Idaho, Montana or British Columbia in a day or two. If you plan to cross into Canada, carry your passport and check current border requirements, and note that propane and certain goods have their own rules at the crossing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Camper Vans in Vancouver, WA

What Camper Van Features Are Useful for Mountain and Coastal Trips?
A fuel-fired heater, four-season insulation, a powered roof fan for condensation, a lithium bank that charges from the alternator on cloudy days, and a gear garage for wet equipment. AWD or 4x4 is worth considering if you drive mountain passes in winter.
Can I Purchase a Camper Van Remotely?
Yes. Most out-of-state buyers complete the entire process over video and email, and the only trip they make is to collect the van.
Does The Vansmith Deliver Camper Vans to Vancouver, WA?
Yes. You can fly into Denver and drive home, or we can arrange transport to Vancouver.
Can I Buy a Used Camper Van in Vancouver, WA?
We keep a rotating selection of inspected used camper vans that ship from Boulder. If you are looking at used camper vans for sale in the Vancouver area from private sellers, check for water intrusion around roof fans and windows first, and use our used van buying checklist .
Can The Vansmith Service or Upgrade My Camper Van?
Yes, at our Boulder shop, whether or not we built it. Contact our team to confirm current service scheduling.
What Is the Difference Between a Sprinter and Ford Transit Camper Van?
The Sprinter is a diesel with longer range and proven AWD and 4x4 options, at a higher purchase and service cost. The Transit is less expensive, easier to service at any Ford dealer, and its EcoBoost engine holds power well at elevation. Both take the same layouts and systems. Read our Sprinter vs. Transit guide .
How Do I Choose the Right Camper Van Layout?
Start with how many people travel and how long your trips run. Two people on weekend trips are well served by a DUO around 19.5 feet. Add an interior shower or a week-long trip profile and the extended XL or XLS layouts make more sense. Families need the FAMILY Series for the seatbelts and berths. Our guide to van layout ideas walks through the trade-offs.
Designed for Vancouver, WA and Pacific Northwest travel

Vancouver, WA Travel Challenges and The Vansmith's Solutions

Vancouver's wet winters, seasonal temperature changes, summer heat, mountain roads, coastal trips, and outdoor recreation all influence how a camper van is used. Insulation, ventilation, electrical systems, storage, and practical layouts can help support comfortable travel throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Vancouver, WA Consideration How We Build For It
Wet Pacific Northwest weather Insulated shell, sealed roof penetrations, a powered roof fan and washable interior surfaces to manage moisture from the inside out.
Cooler temperatures and seasonal travel Four-season insulation and a fuel-fired heater so the van stays usable from October through May.
Summer heat and direct sun exposure Roof fan, insulated window covers and air conditioning options for the dry, hot stretch from July to September.
Rain and moisture during outdoor travel Durable interior materials, a gear garage for wet equipment, and airflow paths that let damp air escape rather than condense.
Mountain and coastal road trips Platform and drivetrain chosen around your actual routes, with storage planned for skis, bikes or boards.
Camping without electrical hookups Solar, lithium storage, DC-DC alternator charging and shore power for three independent ways to recharge.
Outdoor gear storage Layout-specific storage, including a raised bed with a gear garage underneath and roof racks for bulky items.
Extended road trips Fresh and gray water, refrigeration, galley and sleeping systems sized to trip length.
Urban driving and weekend escapes A short-wheelbase build around 19.5 feet parks and maneuvers far more easily than a larger motorhome.
Purchasing from a Colorado-based company Remote video consultations, a fixed itemized quote, staged payments, and pickup in Boulder or arranged delivery.

Condensation deserves its own note here. Two people breathing and cooking in a closed van overnight release a surprising amount of water vapor, and in cool damp weather that vapor finds every cold surface. Insulation, a running roof fan and a heater that dries the air are what keep it from turning into damp bedding and mold behind the panels.

Camper Van Options for Vancouver, WA Travelers

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Camper Vans

The Sprinter holds its value, the diesel gets more range per tank, and its AWD and 4x4 systems have proven themselves on mountain roads. It costs more to buy and service. Buyers heading to Mount Hood in winter often choose it. Browse our Sprinter van conversion lineup or each Sprinter camper for sale we list.

Ford Transit Camper Vans

The Transit costs less up front, the gas engine is cheaper to maintain, and Ford dealers are easy to find on both sides of the river. AWD is available. See our Ford Transit conversion builds and the Ford camper vans for sale in stock.

Class B Camper Vans

A Class B camper is built on a van chassis, so it parks in a standard space, clears most garages, and handles like a tall van rather than a motorhome. Browse our Class B RVs for sale .

Camper Van Layouts for Couples

Our DUO Series sleeps two. The DUO and DUO S run about 19.5 feet on a Sprinter 144 or Transit 148, while the DUO XL and XLS run about 22.5 feet on the extended platforms and add a full interior shower. See camper vans for couples .

Camper Van Layouts for Families

Our FAMILY Series seats and sleeps four, in both short and extended wheelbase versions. The FAMILY XLS adds a full interior shower for longer trips. See family van conversions .

Vancouver, WA Camper Van Road Trip Destinations

Columbia River Gorge

Waterfalls, windsurfing at Hood River, and campgrounds on both sides of the river. Some Gorge access has used timed-entry permits in peak season, so check current requirements before you drive out.

Mount St. Helens

A volcanic landscape unlike anything else in the region, with dispersed camping in the surrounding national forest.

Mount Hood and Northern Oregon

An hour and a half southeast, with skiing well into spring and alpine hiking in summer. Chain requirements are common on Highway 26 in winter storms.

Oregon Coast

Highway 101 runs the full length of the state with state park campgrounds spaced along it. Book ahead in summer.

Washington Coast

Quieter than the Oregon side, with long beaches and small towns. Wind and rain are near-constant outside of midsummer.

Olympic Peninsula

About four hours northwest, including the Hoh Rain Forest, which is one of the wettest places in the lower 48. Moisture management inside the van matters here more than almost anywhere.

Mount Rainier National Park

Two and a half hours north, with alpine meadows in summer and heavy snow in winter. Some campgrounds have vehicle length limits worth checking.

Central Oregon

Bend and the Cascade Lakes are about four hours southeast, with dry high-desert air and cold nights year-round.

Northern California

The redwoods are within a long day's drive south.

Southwest Road Trips

Utah, Arizona and Nevada are all reachable on a longer trip. See camper vans in Utah and camper vans in Nevada .

Camper Van Technology and Technical Specifications

Electrical System Design

Every system is designed and installed by our own team, so the people who wired your van can service it later.

Solar and Lithium Battery Systems

Solar still contributes on overcast days, though output drops sharply under heavy winter cloud. We size the array to your roof and daily use, then plan charging that does not depend on the sun alone. See our Solar Installation page and our solar sizing guide .

MPPT Solar Charge Controllers

MPPT controllers recover more usable power from the same panels, which matters most in the low, diffuse light of a Northwest winter.

DC-DC Alternator Charging

In this region, alternator charging does most of the work from November through March. The drive to the coast or up to Hood puts real energy back into the bank.

Shore-Power Charging

Plug in at a campground or at home to fully charge the batteries without drawing down your reserve.

Battery Monitoring and Management

A monitor shows state of charge in real time, which matters on a gray four-day stretch when solar contributes little.

Off-Grid Air Conditioning

A 12V air conditioner runs from a lithium bank, with runtime governed by battery size, insulation and outside temperature. Read our 12V air conditioning guide .

Heating and Ventilation

A fuel-fired air heater warms the interior on cold nights and dries the air at the same time. A powered roof fan moves damp air out while you sleep, even with windows closed against rain. For an existing van, see Heater Service and roof vent installation .

Thermal Insulation

Walls, ceiling and floor are insulated. Our pre-built Bivy models use Havelock wool, a natural fiber that handles moisture well.

Fresh Water and Gray Water Systems

Tanks sized for multi-day trips and routed to stay protected from freezing where the layout allows. We walk every owner through winterizing before the first hard freeze.

12V Refrigeration

A compressor fridge runs quietly on battery power and draws very little in cool Northwest weather, leaving more capacity for heat and lights.

DC and AC Electrical Distribution

Low-voltage circuits for lights, fans and the fridge, plus an inverter for standard outlets. See our Electrical System work.

Wiring Protection and Circuit Safety

Every circuit fused, labeled and routed away from heat and moving parts.

Flooring and Interior Materials

Sealed Baltic birch cabinetry and washable floors built for wet boots and muddy dogs.

Serviceable Electrical and Plumbing Components

Access panels let a technician reach pumps, fuses and connections without pulling cabinetry apart. See Repairs, installations, and services .
