Albany is within an hour of three separate mountain ranges, which almost no American city can say. The Adirondacks start an hour north, the Catskills an hour south, and the Berkshires 45 minutes east across the Massachusetts line. Thacher State Park is 20 minutes west on the Helderberg escarpment, Lake George an hour north, and southern Vermont about an hour and a half.
Upstate New York asks for a genuine four-season van. January lows in the low teens with real snow, July and August warm and humid, and heavy road salting that is the main long-term threat to a vehicle here. Adirondack nights run considerably colder than Albany's forecast, and many of the best access roads there are dirt.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers across New York. Conversion packages start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models run from $119,700 to $192,570. For the statewide picture, see
camper vans in New York.
The Sprinter has the longest record of any camper van platform in the United States, with all-wheel drive available. See Sprinter van conversions and Sprinter campers for sale.
The Transit costs less to buy and service, Ford dealers are everywhere in the Capital Region, and all-wheel drive is offered on current model years. See Ford Transit van conversions and our Sprinter vs. Transit comparison.
Built out, the 144 runs about 19.5 feet and the 170 about 22.5 feet, both roughly 9 to 10 feet tall in high-roof form. For Adirondack dirt roads and small campgrounds the 144 is easier. The 170 gives you a seating area that matters through a long upstate winter.
The Transit 148 matches the Sprinter 144 and the 148 extended matches the 170.
Worth having here. Upstate snow, Adirondack dirt roads and Catskill grades all make a case for it, paired with a severe snow rated tire. See 4x4 RVs for sale.
Pick the platform first, because wheelbase and layout follow from it.
| Specification | What We Build, and Why It Matters in Albany |
|---|---|
| Base vehicle | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Ford Transit, supplied by you or included in a complete vehicle. The Sprinter has more drivetrain options; the Transit costs less to run in a salt state. |
| Wheelbase and dimensions | Approx. 19.5 ft on the short wheelbase or 22.5 ft extended, 9 to 10 ft tall in high-roof form. The shorter van is easier on Adirondack dirt roads and in small campgrounds. |
| Sleeping capacity | Two on a fixed bed in the DUO Series, four with convertible seating in the FAMILY Series. Bivy models add a pop-top level. |
| Heating system | A fuel-fired air heater running off the vehicle's own fuel tank, sized to the van's volume. It dries the air rather than adding moisture, which matters in a damp upstate winter. |
| Insulation | Full insulation on all six sides; Havelock wool in pre-built Bivy models. It decides how long your fuel and battery last on a cold night. |
| Ventilation | A powered roof fan with variable speed and reversible direction. Run year-round, it is what keeps winter condensation off the windows and out of the cabinets. |
| Air conditioning | Available on every build and standard on the Bivy Deluxe. Upstate summers are warmer and more humid than the winter reputation suggests. |
| House battery | A lithium bank sized around your real overnight load, with low-temperature charge protection, up to 15 kWh in the Bivy Deluxe. Charging lithium below freezing without protection damages cells. |
| Solar charging | A roof array sized to your layout and daily draw. Useful April through October; thin in an upstate winter and under hardwood canopy. |
| Alternator charging | A DC-DC charger on every build. This is the charging source that actually works here between November and February. |
| Fresh water | Tanks sized to your layout and trip length, with insulated lines available. Adirondack sites have limited refill and lines freeze from November. |
| Wastewater | A gray tank matched to fresh capacity, with accessible and fully draining outlets. Primitive sites have no dump facilities and gray lines freeze first. |
| Refrigeration | A 12V compressor fridge running on battery power alone. No propane, and no need to park level at a backcountry site. |
| Electrical monitoring | A battery monitor showing real state of charge rather than voltage. On a cold night with the heater running, you need the real number. |
| Payload | Chassis payload rating worked out against your realistic loaded weight during the design call. Water, batteries, skis and winter gear add up faster than people expect. |
| Storage | Upper cabinets, galley storage and a gear garage beneath the bed with rear door access. Specify a drain, because snow becomes water inside a heated van. |
| Tires and brakes | Chosen around the roads you actually drive; a severe snow rated all-terrain suits most upstate owners. Salt corrodes brake and fuel lines, so they need inspection at every service. |
| Ground clearance | Depends on chassis, trim and drivetrain, with suspension and tire upgrades available. Adirondack dirt roads and unplowed campground entries are the local case for it. |
| Winterization | Accessible drain points, a reachable pump and tanks that empty completely. You will do this every October, so it should take 20 minutes rather than an afternoon. |
| Warranty | Lifetime warranty on cabinetry to the original owner, no mileage or year limit. Appliance warranties come from their manufacturers, and we are NOAH certified. |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your build during the design call.
Nine tailored layouts across the two-person DUO Series and the four-person FAMILY Series, on Sprinter 144 and 170 wheelbases and Transit 148 and 148 extended, plus three pre-built Bivy trims. Browse all tailored models.
A Class B RV is a camper built inside a van body rather than on a truck chassis. It parks in a standard space, handles Adirondack dirt roads, and can be stored indoors through an upstate winter. Browse our Class B RVs for sale.
DUO from $46,950, DUO S from $53,950, DUO XLS from $63,950 and DUO XL on request. FAMILY from $51,950, FAMILY XL from $61,950, FAMILY XLS from $68,950. Three pre-built Bivy trims from $119,700.
Our full current stock, including inspected used vans, is on the camper vans for sale page.
Vans available now, with no build wait, are listed on the camper vans for sale and used vans pages.
Four DUO layouts for two people, three FAMILY layouts for four, and three pre-built Bivy trims. Pre-built Bivy models are ready in 8 to 10 weeks; tailored builds run 12 to 16 weeks.
Use the van designer to work through layouts, battery sizes, heating and storage, then call for an itemized quote.
Chassis availability varies by platform, drivetrain and model year, particularly for all-wheel drive, and it usually affects your timeline more than the build does. Ask early.
Four two-person layouts with a fixed bed and the largest gear garage of any configuration relative to length. See camper vans for couples.
Three four-person layouts with convertible seating and sleeping. See family van conversions.
Bivy Classic $119,700 with a 5 kWh system, Bivy Plus $145,845 with 10 kWh, a diesel cabin heater and an exterior shower, Bivy Deluxe $192,570 with 15 kWh, air conditioning and a Rixen hydronic heater. Bivy XL from $153,700. All on the Sprinter 144 AWD with a pop-top and Havelock wool insulation. See the Bivy comparison.
Two berths on a fixed bed in the DUO Series, four with convertible seating in the FAMILY Series, and two below plus two in the pop-top on Bivy models. A fixed bed is faster and more comfortable at the end of a day; a convertible layout buys daytime floor space.
Tailored builds have the bank sized around your real overnight load during the design call. Bivy trims are fixed at 5, 10 and 15 kWh. For four-season upstate use, the larger systems earn their cost.
Weekend Adirondack trips with a heater running argue for battery capacity over square footage. Longer summer trips argue for water and gray capacity.
A fuel-fired air heater runs off the vehicle's own fuel tank, draws very little electricity and dries the air while it warms it. Propane furnaces add moisture to a space that already has too much in an upstate winter. See Heater Service.
All six sides, in a material that tolerates damp. It determines how long your fuel and battery last on a cold Adirondack night.
A powered roof fan with variable speed and reversible direction, run year-round. See our roof vent installation page.
Long winter nights with the heater fan running, behind weak winter solar. Lithium with low-temperature charge protection is not optional. See our Electrical System work and our cold-weather battery charging guide.
Upstate winter solar is weak, and hardwood canopy at Adirondack and Catskill sites cuts output further. DC-DC alternator charging covers both. See Solar Installation.
A 12V compressor fridge running on battery power alone, a sink with a pressurized water system, and a cooktop.
Tanks sized to your trip length with accessible drain points. You will winterize every year.
Skis for Gore and the Catskill resorts, packs for the High Peaks, bikes for the Mohawk Hudson Bike Hike Trail, paddling gear for Lake George and the Adirondack lakes. A gear garage with a drain handles it.
A severe snow rated all-terrain is the right default. New York road salt corrodes brake and fuel lines, so inspect them at every service.
Output matched to the van's actual volume rather than a catalog minimum.
All six sides, in a material that handles damp.
Worth having, sized against the battery so it works at a site with no hookups.
Lithium loses usable capacity in the cold and must not be charged below freezing without protection.
Size solar for the warm months and rely on the alternator from November.
Decide before October whether you run protected or run dry.
Heating, cooling, insulation and ventilation specified as one system.
Three mountain ranges within an hour means most trips here are one or two nights. That favors a van that is quick to load and easy to park.
The DUO Series for two with maximum gear storage, the FAMILY Series for four.
A gear garage with a drain and rear door access, roof racks and interior tie-downs.
Water, gray and battery capacity are what set how long you can stay out at an Adirondack primitive site.
Twenty minutes west on the Helderberg escarpment. Limestone cliffs, fossil beds and long views over the Hudson Valley.
An hour north. Six million acres, the largest park in the lower 48, with developed campgrounds and primitive camping. Many access roads are dirt and some are rough, and the High Peaks require permits and planning in peak season.
An hour north. Island camping reached by boat, lakeside state campgrounds and a town that fills in summer.
An hour south. Kaaterskill Falls, the Devil's Path and a string of state campgrounds. Closer to New York City, so weekends are busy.
Forty five minutes east into Massachusetts. Mount Greylock, October Mountain and good autumn colour. Northampton is an hour and a quarter.
An hour and a half northeast. Green Mountain National Forest and the ski towns. Vermont dirt roads soften badly in mud season, roughly April and May.
New York charges a vehicle entry fee at many state parks, with camping separate. An Empire Pass covers day use for the year. Reservations open well ahead for summer and foliage season.
Syracuse is two and a half hours west, Rochester three and a half, Boston three east, and New York City two and a half south.
Most campgrounds shut water from October to May. Adirondack and Catskill dirt roads can be impassable in mud season. Fire restrictions apply in dry periods. Check conditions before any shoulder season or winter departure.
