Two things about Kansas shape a camper van, and neither is the one people expect. The first is wind. Sustained crosswinds on I-135 and I-70 can affect handling and fuel economy, making wheelbase, roof setup, and driving conditions important considerations. A shorter wheelbase presents less side area, while a loaded roof rack can increase wind resistance.
The second is that Wichita is a gateway. Colorado is about seven hours west, and the Rockies are within a day's drive. Many vans purchased here spend their best weeks exploring the mountains, making features such as a reliable heater, suitable ground clearance, and tires designed for gravel roads worth considering. The Vansmith creates Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers across Kansas. Conversion packages start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models range from $119,700 to $192,570. For the statewide picture, see

Air conditioning is available across our van options and standard on the Bivy Deluxe. Wichita summers often reach the high 90s and above, with humidity that can keep nights warm. Cooling capacity is therefore an important consideration for July and August travel. Because air conditioning is one of the largest electrical loads in a camper van, the battery bank should be specified around your expected usage. On exposed prairie campsites with little natural shade, insulation and window covers also help manage interior temperatures.
A fuel-fired air heater can draw fuel from the vehicle's tank, with a hydronic heating option available on the Bivy Deluxe. Kansas winters bring freezing temperatures, and wind can make exposed campsites feel colder. Trips west into Colorado may also involve mountain conditions. These heaters generate heat using fuel, but still require a small amount of battery power for the fan and controls. Explore our heater installation options.
Full insulation across the floor, walls, ceiling, and other exposed surfaces helps manage Kansas temperature extremes. Wichita can experience temperatures around 100 degrees in summer and single-digit readings in winter. Pre-built Bivy models feature Havelock wool insulation. A well-insulated interior helps reduce the workload on both the air conditioner and heater, while limiting heat gain when parking in exposed prairie locations.
A powered roof fan with variable speed and reversible airflow helps circulate air throughout the van. Planned airflow paths behind cabinetry also help reduce stagnant spaces. During humid Kansas summers, ventilation supports interior comfort, while in colder months it helps manage moisture and condensation that can collect behind cabinets and other enclosed areas.
Lithium battery banks are specified around your expected overnight power use, with capacity options reaching up to 15 kWh in the Bivy Deluxe. Roof-mounted solar and DC-DC alternator charging provide additional ways to replenish stored energy. Kansas offers good solar potential, although actual output depends on season, weather, panel orientation, and parking conditions. In freezing weather, lithium batteries require appropriate charging protection. Explore our Electrical System and Solar Installation work.
Fresh and gray water tanks are sized according to the selected layout, with a pressurized pump and accessible drain points. Kansas winters can bring prolonged freezing conditions, so water systems need appropriate cold-weather preparation. Depending on how you use the van, this may mean keeping vulnerable components adequately heated or draining the tanks, water heater if fitted, and water lines completely. Follow the system-specific winterization instructions before temperatures drop below freezing.
| Specification | What We Build | Why It Matters in Wichita |
|---|---|---|
| Base vehicle | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Ford Transit, supplied by you or included in a complete vehicle. | The Transit is cheaper to buy and service across Kansas; the Sprinter's 4x4 suits trips west. |
| Wheelbase and dimensions | Approx. 19.5 ft on the short wheelbase or 22.5 ft extended, 9 to 10 ft tall in high-roof form. | The shorter van handles plains crosswinds better, uses less fuel and fits Colorado campgrounds. |
| Sleeping capacity | Two on a fixed bed in the DUO Series, four with convertible seating in the FAMILY Series. | Decides the layout, and a fixed bed leaves the gear garage free. |
| Heating system | A fuel-fired air heater on the vehicle's own fuel, or a Rixen hydronic system on the Bivy Deluxe. | Kansas winters are cold and windy, and the mountains west of here are colder still. |
| Insulation | Full insulation on all six sides; Havelock wool in pre-built Bivy models. | On a treeless prairie site it is the main barrier between the sun and your interior, and it helps retain heat in January. |
| Ventilation | A powered roof fan with variable speed and reversible direction, with airflow behind cabinetry. | Useful for cooling in summer and condensation control in winter. |
| Air conditioning | Available on every build and standard on the Bivy Deluxe. | Wichita summers run near and above 100 degrees with little shade available. |
| House battery | A lithium bank sized around your real overnight load, up to 15 kWh. | Overnight cooling sets the size; cold winter nights reduce usable capacity. |
| Solar charging | A roof array sized to your layout and daily draw. | Kansas has good sun and open sky, so an array can perform well when weather and parking conditions are favorable. |
| Alternator charging | A DC-DC charger on every build. | Supports charging in winter and replenishes the battery during long interstate drives. |
| Fresh water | Tanks sized to your layout, with a pressurized pump and accessible drain points. | State park hookups are common in Kansas, but western trips need sufficient water capacity. |
| Wastewater | A gray tank matched to fresh capacity, with accessible drains. | Kansas state parks offer dump facilities, while dispersed camping areas farther west may have fewer services. |
| Refrigeration | A 12V compressor fridge running on battery power alone. | No propane or level-parking requirement, and it maintains cooling in a hot van. |
| Electrical monitoring | A battery monitor showing real state of charge rather than voltage alone. | Useful when running cooling overnight and in cold weather, when accurate battery monitoring matters. |
| Payload | Chassis payload rating worked out against your realistic loaded weight during the design call. | Water and a large battery bank are heavy items, and wind already affects driving economy. |
| Tires and brakes | Chosen around your routes, with all-terrain and winter-rated options. | Kansas gravel roads can be hard on sidewalls, and Colorado mountain passes may have chain requirements. |
| Ground clearance | Depends on chassis, trim and drivetrain, with suspension and tire upgrades available. | Not usually a constraint on Kansas roads; it matters for the mountain trips many buyers here are planning. |
| Crosswind handling | A shorter, lower-profile build presents less side area; a loaded roof can increase wind resistance. | Plains wind is a regular driving consideration here, not just an occasional one. |
| Warranty | Lifetime warranty on cabinetry to the original owner, with no mileage or year limit. | Appliance warranties come from their manufacturers, and The Vansmith is NOAH certified. |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your vehicle specifications during the design call.
