Anderson has something most small Indiana cities do not: a state park within the city limits featuring 2,000-year-old earthworks. Mounds State Park sits along the White River a few minutes from downtown, with ten Adena and Hopewell mounds, a campground, and river trails. Summit Lake is about 30 minutes east, Indianapolis is 40 minutes southwest, Brown County State Park is an hour and a half south, Turkey Run is an hour and a half west, and the Hoosier National Forest is about two hours away.
Indiana calls for a genuine four-season camper van. January lows can fall into the high teens, with snow and winter road salting. July temperatures often reach the mid-80s with significant humidity, while spring can bring severe weather. Insulation, reliable heating, ventilation, and appropriate winter maintenance are important considerations for year-round travel, particularly because road salt can pose a long-term corrosion risk.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers across Indiana. Conversion packages start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models range from $119,700 to $192,570. For the statewide overview, explore
camper vans in Indiana.
The Sprinter has the longest record of any camper van platform in the United States, with all-wheel drive available. Mercedes commercial service in central Indiana means a drive toward Indianapolis, which is worth factoring into a decade of ownership. See Sprinter van conversions and Sprinter campers for sale.
The Transit costs less to buy and service, Ford dealers are present in and around Anderson, and all-wheel drive is offered on current model years. For a central Indiana buyer that local service access is a genuine argument. See Ford Transit van conversions and our Sprinter vs. Transit comparison.
Built out, the 144 runs about 19.5 feet and the 170 about 22.5 feet, both roughly 9 to 10 feet tall in high-roof form. Anderson has the driveway and garage space for either, which is an advantage over denser cities. Check the longer build against Indiana state park campground limits before deciding.
The Transit 148 matches the Sprinter 144 and the 148 extended matches the 170.
Useful rather than essential in central Indiana. The real cases are winter mornings, gravel access roads in the Hoosier National Forest, and open-country drifting on rural roads. See 4x4 RVs for sale.
Pick the platform first, because wheelbase and layout follow from it.
| Specification | What We Build, and Why It Matters in Anderson |
|---|---|
| Base Vehicle | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Ford Transit, supplied by you or included in a complete vehicle. In central Indiana, Ford service access is a point in the Transit's favor. |
| Wheelbase and Dimensions | Approx. 19.5 ft on the short wheelbase or 22.5 ft extended, 9 to 10 ft tall in high-roof form. Anderson has the driveway space for either; check the longer one against state park limits. |
| Sleeping Capacity | Two on a fixed bed in the DUO Series, four with convertible seating in the FAMILY Series. Bivy models add a pop-top level. |
| Heating System | A fuel-fired air heater running off the vehicle's own fuel tank, sized to the van's volume. It dries the air rather than adding moisture, which matters in an Indiana winter. |
| Insulation | Full insulation on all six sides; Havelock wool in pre-built Bivy models. It does real work at both ends of a four-season climate. |
| Ventilation | A powered roof fan with variable speed and reversible direction. It handles August humidity and January condensation, which are the same problem from two ends. |
| Air Conditioning | Available on every build and standard on the Bivy Deluxe. Indiana August nights stay warm and humid, and many state park sites have no hookups. |
| House Battery | A lithium bank sized around your real overnight load, with low-temperature charge protection, up to 15 kWh in the Bivy Deluxe. Charging lithium below freezing without protection damages cells. |
| Solar Charging | A roof array sized to your layout and daily draw. Good April through October; thin in a grey Indiana winter and under hardwood canopy at Brown County. |
| Alternator Charging | A DC-DC charger on every build. This is the charging source that works through an Indiana winter. |
| Fresh Water | Tanks sized to your layout and trip length, with insulated lines available. Hoosier National Forest sites have no refill, and lines freeze from November. |
| Wastewater | A gray tank matched to fresh capacity, with accessible and fully draining outlets. Primitive sites have no dump facilities and gray lines freeze first. |
| Refrigeration | A 12V compressor fridge running on battery power alone. No propane, and no need to park level at a forest site. |
| Electrical Monitoring | A battery monitor showing real state of charge rather than voltage. Running cooling or heating overnight off grid, you need the real number. |
| Payload | Chassis payload rating worked out against your realistic loaded weight during the design call. Water, batteries and gear add up faster than people expect. |
| Storage | Upper cabinets, galley storage and a gear garage beneath the bed with rear door access. Specify a drain, because snow and wet gear both become water inside a heated van. |
| Tires and Brakes | Chosen around the roads you actually drive; a severe snow rated all-terrain suits most Indiana owners. Road salt corrodes brake and fuel lines, so they need inspection at every service. |
| Ground Clearance | Depends on chassis, trim and drivetrain, with suspension and tire upgrades available. Gravel access in the Hoosier National Forest and unplowed winter entries are the local cases. |
| Winterization | Accessible drain points, a reachable pump and tanks that empty completely. You will do this every October, so it should take 20 minutes rather than an afternoon. |
| Warranty | Lifetime warranty on cabinetry to the original owner, no mileage or year limit. Appliance warranties come from their manufacturers, and we are NOAH certified. |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your build during the design call.
Nine tailored layouts across the two-person DUO Series and the four-person FAMILY Series, on Sprinter 144 and 170 wheelbases and Transit 148 and 148 extended, plus three pre-built Bivy trims. Browse all tailored models.
A Class B RV is a camper built inside a van body rather than on a truck chassis. It parks in a standard space, fits most garages, and can be stored indoors through an Indiana winter, which does more for its lifespan here than any option you can specify. Browse our Class B RVs for sale.
DUO from $46,950, DUO S from $53,950, DUO XLS from $63,950 and DUO XL on request. FAMILY from $51,950, FAMILY XL from $61,950, FAMILY XLS from $68,950. Three pre-built Bivy trims from $119,700.
Our full current stock, including inspected used vans, is on the camper vans for sale page.
Vans available now, with no build wait, are listed on the camper vans for sale and used vans pages.
Four DUO layouts for two people, three FAMILY layouts for four, and three pre-built Bivy trims. Pre-built Bivy models are ready in 8 to 10 weeks; tailored builds run 12 to 16 weeks.
Use the van designer to work through layouts, battery sizes, heating and storage, then call for an itemized quote.
Chassis availability varies by platform, drivetrain and model year, particularly for all-wheel drive, and it usually affects your timeline more than the build does.
Four two-person layouts with a fixed bed and the largest gear garage of any configuration relative to length. See camper vans for couples.
Three four-person layouts with convertible seating and sleeping. See family van conversions.
Bivy Classic $119,700 with a 5 kWh system, Bivy Plus $145,845 with 10 kWh, a diesel cabin heater and an exterior shower, Bivy Deluxe $192,570 with 15 kWh, air conditioning and a Rixen hydronic heater. Bivy XL from $153,700. All on the Sprinter 144 AWD with a pop-top and Havelock wool insulation. See the Bivy comparison.
Two berths on a fixed bed in the DUO Series, four with convertible seating in the FAMILY Series, and two below plus two in the pop-top on Bivy models.
Tailored builds have the bank sized around your real overnight load during the design call. Bivy trims are fixed at 5, 10 and 15 kWh. For four-season Indiana use, the larger systems earn their cost.
Weekend trips to Mounds and Summit Lake argue for a van that is quick to load and easy to park. Longer trips to Brown County, the Smokies or the Great Lakes argue for water, gray and battery capacity.
A fuel-fired air heater runs off the vehicle's own fuel tank, draws very little electricity and dries the air while it warms it. Propane furnaces add moisture to a space that already has enough in an Indiana winter. See Heater Service and our Sprinter heater guide.
All six sides, in a material that tolerates moisture. In Indiana it does real work in both directions, against January cold and August humidity.
A powered roof fan with variable speed and reversible direction. Summer humidity and winter condensation are the same problem seen from two ends. See our roof vent installation page.
Two load cases: overnight cooling in August and the heater fan on a January night, with weak winter solar behind both. Lithium with low-temperature charge protection matters here. See our Electrical System work.
Indiana solar is good spring through autumn and weak in a grey winter with snow on the panels. Hardwood canopy at Brown County and Hoosier sites cuts output further. DC-DC alternator charging covers both. See Solar Installation and our solar sizing guide.
A 12V compressor fridge running on battery power alone, a sink with a pressurized water system, and a cooktop.
Tanks sized to your trip length with accessible drain points. You will winterize every year.
Bikes for the Cardinal Greenway and the Brown County trails, paddling gear for the White River and Summit Lake, fishing tackle, camping gear and bulky winter clothing. A gear garage with a drain handles it.
A severe snow rated all-terrain is the right default for an Indiana winter. Road salt corrodes brake and fuel lines, so inspect them at every service.
Output matched to the van's actual volume rather than a catalog minimum.
All six sides, in a material that tolerates moisture.
Worth having, sized against the battery so it works at a site with no hookups.
Lithium loses usable capacity in the cold and must not be charged below freezing without protection.
Size solar for the warm months and rely on the alternator from November.
Decide before October whether you run protected or run dry.
Indiana sits in an active severe weather corridor with a spring peak. A van is not shelter in a tornado warning. Travel with a weather radio or alert app, know where substantial buildings are along your route, and treat a warning as a reason to get out of the van and into a building.
Mounds is minutes away and Summit Lake half an hour, so most trips from Anderson are one or two nights. That favors a van that loads quickly and parks easily.
The DUO Series for two with maximum gear storage, the FAMILY Series for four.
A gear garage with a drain and rear door access, roof racks and interior tie-downs.
Water, gray and battery capacity are what set how long you can stay out at a Hoosier National Forest site.
Inside Anderson on the White River. Ten prehistoric earthworks built by the Adena and Hopewell cultures, with a campground, river trails and a nature center. Unusual for a park this close to a city center.
Thirty minutes east near New Castle. Camping, boating, fishing and good birding on a large lake.
An hour and a half south near Nashville, Indiana. The largest state park in Indiana, known as the Little Smokies, with ridge roads, extensive camping and the best autumn colour in the state. It books out for October weekends.
About two hours south. Indiana's only national forest, with dispersed camping, the Charles Deam Wilderness and gravel access roads. No facilities at dispersed sites, which is where tank capacity matters.
An hour and a half west. Sandstone ravines, ladders down into the gorges and some of the most distinctive hiking in the Midwest.
Three hours northwest on Lake Michigan. Dunes, beach and a campground, with Chicago visible across the water on a clear day.
Forty minutes southwest. The Monon Trail, Eagle Creek Park and a useful resupply point before heading south.
Indiana state parks charge a vehicle entry fee, with camping booked separately. Reservations open ahead for summer and autumn weekends, and Brown County in October is the hardest booking in the state.
Cincinnati is two hours southeast, Louisville two and a half south, Chicago three and a half northwest, and the Smokies six hours southeast.
Most Indiana campgrounds shut water from October to April. Open-country drifting closes rural roads faster than snowfall totals suggest. Hoosier National Forest gravel roads soften in spring. Check conditions before any winter departure.
Supply your own Sprinter or Transit, or buy a complete van with the chassis included from $115,950. Cabinetry, bed platform, galley, seating and finished surfaces built in our Boulder shop.

More than 300 vans built since 2016, across both platforms and every wheelbase.
Nine tailored layouts plus three pre-built Bivy trims, configured around how you travel rather than around what a dealer has in stock, which matters more in a market where local choice is limited.
Lithium bank, solar, DC-DC charging, shore power, inverter and monitoring designed as one system.
We build in Boulder for cold weather and real four-season conditions.
