Atlanta is a better van city than its reputation suggests. North Georgia's mountains start 90 minutes up I-575, the Blue Ridge Parkway is within a half day, and the Gulf and Atlantic coasts are both reachable on a long weekend. The catch is the metro itself: traffic that makes vehicle size a daily consideration, garage clearances that rule out most high-roof vans, and summer humidity that decides how the van should be specified.
The Vansmith builds Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit camper vans in Boulder, Colorado, and delivers them across metro Atlanta. We have built more than 300 vans since 2016. Conversion packages start at $46,950, complete vans with the chassis included start at $115,950, and pre-built Bivy models run from $119,700 to $192,570. For the statewide picture, see
camper vans in Georgia.
The metro area is large and congested, and most trips begin with freeway miles. A van around 19.5 feet drives close to a full-size pickup, which makes it workable as a daily vehicle. An extended 22.5-foot build is noticeably less pleasant in stop-and-go traffic.
Summer highs sit in the upper 80s and low 90s with humidity that pushes the heat index higher. Humidity, not raw temperature, is what makes a poorly ventilated van uncomfortable here.
Atlanta gets substantial annual rainfall, with afternoon storms common through summer. Sealed roof penetrations and a gear garage for wet equipment handle the practical side.
Atlanta has four genuine seasons. Winter nights drop below freezing, and North Georgia mountain temperatures run considerably colder, so a heater earns its place.
This is the constraint that catches Atlanta buyers out. A high-roof van stands roughly 9 to 10 feet tall, and many metro parking decks and residential garages post clearances below that. Measure your garage door opening before ordering, and check HOA rules if you have them.
The Chattahoochee National Forest, the Cohutta Wilderness and the southern end of the Appalachian Trail are all within two hours. Beyond that, the Smokies, the Carolinas and the Gulf are all weekend-range.
| Technical Specification | Atlanta Consideration | What to Evaluate | What We Build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air conditioning | Hot, humid summers | Cooling capacity against battery capacity | 12V air conditioning sized to the lithium bank |
| Ventilation | Humidity more than raw heat | Fan placement, speed and direction control | Powered roof fan with variable speed and direction |
| Insulation | Works in both directions | Coverage on all six sides | Full insulation; Havelock wool in pre-built Bivy models |
| House battery | Overnight cooling is the limiting load | Usable capacity, not nominal | Lithium bank sized around your largest overnight load |
| Solar | Useful spring through fall | Panel wattage against roof area | Roof array sized to layout and daily draw |
| Alternator charging | Metro and highway miles | DC-DC charger output | DC-DC charger fitted on every build |
| Shore power | Campgrounds and home charging | Onboard charger and input rating | Shore connection on every build |
| Refrigeration | Warm-weather travel | Capacity and power draw | 12V compressor fridge running on battery power |
| Water system | Trip length and winter freezing | Fresh and gray capacity, plus drain access | Tanks sized to trip length with accessible drain points |
| Vehicle height | The binding constraint in metro Atlanta | Roughly 9 to 10 ft in high roof form | Measure your garage door opening before ordering |
| Vehicle length | Traffic and parking | Approx. 19.5 ft or 22.5 ft built | Short wheelbase is the easier daily vehicle here |
| Tires | Interstate, wet pavement and gravel | Type, condition and age | Chosen around the mix you actually drive |
| Storage | North Georgia outdoor gear | Interior volume plus roof racks | Gear garage under a raised bed, cabinets and roof racks |
Exact figures for payload, ground clearance, tire sizing and vehicle dimensions depend on the chassis, trim and drivetrain you choose. We confirm each against your build during the design call.
Nine tailored layouts across the two-person DUO Series and the four-person FAMILY Series, plus three pre-built Bivy trims. Browse all tailored models .
A Class B is a camper built on a van chassis rather than a truck frame. It parks in a standard space, fits many home garages, and drives like a tall van, which in Atlanta traffic is the difference between a vehicle you use and one you avoid. Browse our Class B RVs for sale .
Current stock, including inspected used vans, is listed on our camper vans for sale page.
Every layout is available as a camper van for sale in Atlanta, built to order in Boulder. Use our van designer or call (303) 414-6834 for a fixed, itemized quote.
Insulation first, ventilation second, cooling third. A powered roof fan pulls hot, damp air out through the ceiling where it collects, insulated window covers keep sun off the glass, and air conditioning then has far less work to do. See our A/C installation page and guide on keeping an RV cool in summer .
Airflow paths behind cabinets, sealed surfaces and a fan that runs while you sleep prevent the standing moisture that leads to mildew in a humid climate.
Air conditioning is the largest draw in any van. We size the lithium bank around overnight cooling, charged by solar, DC-DC alternator charging and shore power. See our Electrical System work.
Hiking, paddling and camping gear for North Georgia trips, plus whatever the van carries as a daily vehicle. A gear garage beneath a raised bed keeps it separate from the living space.
Length affects traffic and parking; height decides whether the van fits your garage. Settle both before you choose a layout.
Interstate miles, wet pavement and gravel forest roads in North Georgia each ask something different. Choose tires around the mix you actually drive.
Two people fit comfortably in a DUO. Four need the FAMILY Series for the seatbelts and berths, not just the floor space.

Extended platform around 22.5 feet, with more storage and a flexible sleeping system.
The most complete two-person layout, with a full interior bathroom and extended power. From $63,950 as a conversion.
Four seatbelts and four berths on the short wheelbase. From $51,950 as a conversion.
Extended family layout with a bench shower and extra storage. From $61,950 as a conversion.
Full interior shower and full power systems for longer trips without hookups. From $68,950 as a conversion.
Pre-built on a Sprinter 144 AWD with a pop-top and four-season Havelock wool insulation, ready in 8 to 10 weeks. Classic from $119,700, Plus from $145,845, Deluxe from $192,570 with air conditioning fitted. See our Bivy comparison .
For most Atlanta buyers, the short-wheelbase layouts are the right answer. They handle metro traffic, fit more garages, and cover the two and three-night North Georgia trips that make up most travel from here. Step up to an extended layout only if you have confirmed off-street space and take week-long trips regularly.
Conversion pricing covers the build only. Complete-van pricing from $115,950 includes the chassis, and we can source the vehicle for you.
