Frequently asked questions

What's included in the base price of a Vansmith conversion?

Every build (except the Foundation) includes a complete electrical system with solar, full plumbing, a kitchen galley, and our VersaBed flexible bed system. Pricing clearly shows whether it's a conversion-only price or includes the van. What you see is full capability — not a stripped-down starting point.

How long does a build take?

Typically 4 to 16 weeks depending on the model and level of customization. We also have prebuilt and used vans available on-site for buyers who want to skip the wait.

Can I visit The Vansmith shop?

Yes! We're open Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm, by appointment only. Please make an appointment so we can make sure to have someone available to attend to you. Come see builds in progress, sit inside finished vans, and talk through your options with our team in Boulder.

Can I customize the layout and features?

Absolutely. We offer prebuilt models that allow limited upgrades, our tailored models that allow some customization, or our custom offering if you want something truly unique. Start with our design page to explore your options.

What warranty do you offer?

Our cabinetry comes with a lifetime warranty for the original owner. Vehicles and systems carry their factory warranties. We stand behind our craftsmanship and are here for support long after delivery.

Do you offer financing?

We partner with LightStream and other lenders who specialize in adventure vehicle financing. Loans range from $5K to $100K with flexible terms and no fees. Visit our financing page for details and to explore your options.

What's the difference between your van models?

Our DUO line is designed for couples, FAMILY for 3 to 5 passengers, and the Bivy line offers prebuilt models. Bivy vans share the same quality and design approach as our other models but have less ability to modify the designs. Each model comes in different wheelbase options to match your driving and living preferences.

What is your build process?

Our process has five clear steps:

1. Detailed Quote — We give you a comprehensive quote based on your needs and preferences.
2. Design Deposit ($2,500) — You secure your spot, and we finalize color selections and hammer out any final details.
3. Design Finalized (50% deposit) — We lock in your design and use this to purchase parts for your build.
4. Build Launches (25% payment) — Your van enters the shop. It takes us 4–6 weeks to complete from the start of the build.
5. Pick Up or Ship Out (final 25%) — Your van is ready. Come pick it up in Boulder or we'll arrange shipping. Let's do it!

More Questions
How do I register and title a camper van conversion?

Registration varies by state, but most converted vans are titled as passenger vehicles, not RVs — which typically means lower registration fees and no special DMV classification required. Some states allow you to re-title as a recreational vehicle if the conversion meets certain criteria, which can affect insurance options. We can walk you through what other Colorado customers have done, and recommend you confirm the current rules with your state DMV before purchase.

What kind of insurance do I need for a converted van?

Most owners insure their Vansmith build under a standard auto policy for driving, and add a specialty RV or campervan endorsement to cover the conversion itself — the cabinetry, electrical system, and appliances. Carriers like National General, Progressive, and Roamly specialize in adventure vehicle coverage and understand custom builds. We recommend getting a quote that reflects the full conversion value, not just the base vehicle, so you're fully covered if something happens on the road.

How long do camper van conversions last?

The base van — typically a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit — is rated for 300,000+ miles with proper maintenance. Our conversion components are built to match that lifespan: aircraft-grade aluminum framing, marine-grade wiring, and cabinetry backed by a lifetime warranty for the original owner. Many of our customers plan to use their van for a decade or more. The biggest longevity factors are regular van servicing, keeping the roof and seams sealed, and not letting moisture sit anywhere it shouldn't.

Can I live in a Vansmith van full-time?

Yes — several of our builds are specifically designed with full-time living in mind. Our DUO and FAMILY models include features that make extended living practical: fresh and grey water tanks, shore power hookup, diesel or propane heating, and ample storage. We'd recommend starting with our design consultation so we can configure the right capacity and layout for a full-time setup versus a weekend rig.

What happens if something breaks after I take delivery?

Our cabinetry carries a lifetime warranty for the original owner, and most electrical and plumbing components carry manufacturer warranties. Beyond that, we offer ongoing support — if something isn't working right, reach out to our team and we'll diagnose it remotely or get you in for a look. We also build with commonly available parts so you're never dependent on us specifically to find a replacement on the road.

Can I take the van to Canada or Mexico?

Yes. Driving a converted van into Canada is straightforward — same process as any personal vehicle. Mexico requires a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP) and Mexican auto insurance, both of which are easy to arrange at the border or in advance online. If you're planning extended international travel, let us know during the design phase and we can factor in things like dual-fuel capability or a larger fresh water capacity.

Does a camper van conversion hold its value?

Custom conversions typically depreciate more slowly than factory RVs because demand for quality builds consistently exceeds supply. A well-documented Vansmith build — with photos, service records, and original spec sheet — tends to hold value well in the used market. The base van's mileage and condition are the primary drivers of resale price; the conversion itself often adds a meaningful premium, especially as our brand recognition grows.

How to choose your camper van

We have built more than 300 vans in Boulder since 2016. These are the four questions we walk every buyer through, and the honest answers we give in the shop.

Turnkey or conversion package?

If you already own a Sprinter or Transit, a conversion package is the best value in this market. You skip the chassis cost and put the budget into the build itself. Our Duo package starts at well under half the price of a turnkey van.

If you do not own a van yet, turnkey is simpler. We source the chassis, handle the build, and you make one purchase and drive away.

Sprinter or Transit?

The Sprinter holds value better, the diesel gets more range per tank, and the AWD system has years of proven mountain use. It costs more to buy and more to service.

The Transit costs less up front, the gas engine is cheaper to maintain, and any Ford dealer in the country can work on it. The EcoBoost also keeps its power at altitude, something we notice here in Colorado. We build both every week, and neither is the wrong answer.

Fixed bed or convertible?

This is the decision people get stuck on. A fixed bed gives you garage storage underneath for bikes and skis, and the bed is always ready. A convertible layout gives you a real living space during the day.

Couples who ride or ski almost always choose the fixed bed. Families usually need the convertible space. Decide based on what a normal Tuesday in the van looks like, not the perfect trip.

Do you really need the shower?

An interior shower costs you cabinet space, adds weight, and adds to the budget. Weekend travelers often skip it and never miss it.

Full timers and winter athletes tell us the opposite. If you will live in the van for months or change out of a wetsuit or ski gear regularly, get the shower. It is much harder to add later than to include now.

Still deciding? Try our free van designer or talk to a builder. No pressure, we like talking about vans.

Why choose The Vansmith?

Every build we finish comes with a lifetime warranty on the cabinetry for the original owner, no fine print about mileage or years.

Tested layouts, not prototypes

Our layouts have been refined across 300+ builds since 2016. What you order is a proven floor plan, not a first attempt.

New camper van conversions

Our new builds are converted in-house at our Boulder shop on Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit platforms. Every conversion includes a full electrical system with solar, fresh and grey water plumbing, a kitchen galley, and our VersaBed flexible sleeping system. Used camper vans

Our used inventory includes previously owned Vansmith conversions and select third-party builds we've inspected and stand behind. Each van comes with a condition report covering the electrical system, plumbing, appliances, and base vehicle.
