A 2021 Sprinter 1500 built by Forged Vans rather than by The Vansmith, set up for two with a fixed rear bed, a full-width gear garage underneath, and both a diesel heater and roof-mounted air conditioning for year-round use.
What we love about this van
We did not build this one, so we went through it the way you would. Here is what stood out.
- The garage is the whole story. The fixed rear bed leaves a full-width gear bay underneath, lit end to end with LED strips. The owners used it for climbing gear and crash pads, and as an extra sleeping space for guests. On a 144 inch van, that much usable bay is rare.
- Heat and air conditioning, both. A diesel air heater handles winter and a roof-mounted Dometic unit handles summer. Most vans this size make you pick one, and retrofitting the air conditioning later is neither cheap nor simple.
- Bamboo cabinetry, and low VOC throughout. The build used low VOC materials, with bamboo cabinets, wood panel walls and marine vinyl flooring. It is a quieter, warmer interior than the usual plywood and laminate.
- 4.8 kWh of lithium under 500 watts of solar. That is 400Ah of LiFePO4 with an inverter for household outlets and DC-DC charging off the alternator. It is a genuinely large solar array for a 144, so the bank keeps up in real use.
- An upgraded driver's seat. The Scheel-Mann seat in the driver's position is the kind of thing you only appreciate on the third day of a long drive. The owners called it worth every penny.
- Lighting done properly. Dimmable throughout, and zoned so you can light the galley without lighting the bed. Small thing, noticed constantly.

About this build
This van is for sale by its owners rather than by us. We are handling the listing and the walkthroughs, so start with us.
It is a 2021 Sprinter 1500 on the 144 inch high-roof body, converted by Forged Vans rather than by The Vansmith. The layout is a two-person one: a fixed rear bed across the back, a full-width gear garage underneath it, and a galley running down the driver's side finished in bamboo, with wood panel walls and marine vinyl underfoot. The owners specified low VOC materials throughout the build.
It is set up for all four seasons in both directions. A diesel air heater covers the cold and a roof-mounted Dometic air conditioner covers the heat, which is unusual on a van this size and expensive to add after the fact. The shell is insulated and every window has a cover.
Power is a 400Ah (4.8 kWh) LiFePO4 bank fed by 500 watts of rooftop solar, with an inverter for household outlets and DC-DC charging off the alternator. The galley runs an induction cooktop, a 12V compressor fridge over 85 litres, and a stainless sink with running hot water off a 30 gallon fresh tank. Mercedes-Benz Service B was completed recently.
