Oregon vanlife FAQs

Can I camp on BLM land in Oregon without a reservation?
Yes. Oregon has some of the most accessible dispersed BLM camping in the lower 48. Areas like Christmas Valley (Lake County), Steens Mountain, and the Owyhee Canyonlands near Jordan Valley are all first-come, free, and open to 14-day stays. Some Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) units also allow dispersed camping with a free permit. No hookups, no booking window — just show up and stay the full two weeks.
Do your vans fit on McKenzie Pass and other restricted Oregon mountain roads?
Yes. Hwy 242 (McKenzie Pass) restricts vehicles over 35 feet. Our DUO and FAMILY builds are 19 feet; DUO XL and FAMILY XL are 22 feet — both fit comfortably. If you're planning routes on narrow forest roads or restricted passes, our team can confirm clearances for any specific road during your design consultation.
How does the insulation handle western Oregon's rain versus Bend's dry heat?
The spray foam insulation used in every Vansmith build does two jobs: it insulates against cold and heat, and it acts as a vapour barrier. In wet western Oregon — Portland, the Cascades, the coast — it prevents warm interior air from reaching cold surfaces and forming condensation inside your walls. In Bend or eastern Oregon's high desert, the same foam keeps the interior cool when temperatures push past 90°F. One build, both climates.
How long does delivery take to Portland or Bend?
Custom builds typically take 10–14 weeks from deposit to delivery. We deliver directly to Oregon — Portland, Bend, Eugene, Ashland, and beyond. For buyers who want a van sooner, we also carry pre-built and used inventory that can ship within a few weeks. Contact us to see what's currently available for fast delivery to your area.

Built for the Oregon Way of Life

Oregon’s landscapes demand versatility, endurance, and comfort. Every Vansmith build is created to handle wet forests, steep grades, and remote backcountry roads while keeping you cozy and connected.

  • No-Condensation Insulation: Spray foam fills every cavity and acts as a vapour barrier, stopping moisture from forming on interior walls — the #1 concern for anyone camping in the Cascades or coast through winter.
  • 14-Day BLM-Ready Power: 200Ah lithium + solar means you hit the BLM dispersed limit before you hit your battery limit. Christmas Valley, Steens, Owyhee — all covered.
  • Durable, Non-Porous Surfaces: Sealed Baltic birch and wipe-clean finishes handle wet gear, muddy boots, and weeks without a laundromat.
  • Restricted-Road Dimensions: At 19 ft (DUO/FAMILY) and 22 ft (XL models), these builds access roads that larger RVs can't — including Hwy 242 McKenzie Pass.
  • Sustainable Build for Oregon Values: Renewable Baltic birch, eco-conscious finishes, and a builder with a 4.8-star rating across 300+ builds.

Explore Oregon in a Vansmith

Some of our favorite routes and destinations for Vansmith owners include:

  • McKenzie Pass Highway (Hwy 242): Closed to vehicles over 35 feet — DUO and FAMILY builds fit comfortably. Lava fields, old-growth forest, and almost no traffic after Labor Day.
  • Steens Mountain / Alvord Desert: Approach via Fields on the east side. 100+ miles of gravel, zero cell service, and a playa that reflects the sky. The 200Ah solar system was built for exactly this.
  • Christmas Valley, Lake County: BLM dispersed camping with 14-day limits and no crowds. Fossils, dunes, and more stars than you've seen before.
  • Owyhee River Canyonlands (near Jordan Valley): Remote canyon roads, free BLM sites, and the kind of silence that makes the drive worth it.
  • Owyhee Canyonlands via the Rome launch: Best accessed in spring before temps spike. Bring the kayak, use the exterior shower, stay the full 14 days.

Our customers have taken Vansmith builds to every one of these places and beyond.
